Type “www.routerlogin.net The R7900 Netgear router comes with default security. This means that the Wireless network name (or SSID), Network Security key (or password), and security option (encryption protocol) are set up in the factory. The Initial SSID Name and password are unique. As it is generated for every Netgear Router to make sure it should be protected and maximize your WiFi security. You can also find the default SSID and password on the router label at the backside or bottom.

IMPORTANT: If you change your default security settings. Write down the new settings on the page and put it in a safe place where you can easily find it.

Check the Basic WiFi Settings and WiFi Security Settings:

You can view or change the basic SSID Name and Wireless Password. The Netgear R7900 router is a tri-band WiFi access point that simultaneously supports the 2.4GHz band for 802.11b/g/n devices and the 5GHz band for 802.11a/n/ac devices.

NOTE: If you change the wireless settings of the router’s main network, use a wired connection to avoid being disconnected when the new Wireless settings take effect.

Steps to change the Wireless Name and Wireless Password:

  1. Launch a web browser e.g. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Safari from a computer or mobile device that is connected to the home network.
  2. Enter http://www.routerlogin.net or default IP address 192.168.1.1.
  3. A login window will be prompt on the screen.
  4. Enter the router’s username and password. The username is admin as per default settings. The default password is a password as per default. The username and password both are case-sensitive.
  5. The BASIC Home page displays.
  6. Select the Wireless option. The Wireless settings page is displayed.
  7. You can view or change the basic WiFi settings and password settings.

The following table describes the fields on the Wireless Network page.

Security Options

This information applies to the 2.4GHz WiFi network.

If you change the WiFi security, select one of the following WiFi security options for the router’s WiFi network:

  1. None- An open WiFi network that does not ask for any password. It means any WiFi device can join the WiFi network without a password.
  2. WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)- This is a legacy authentication and data encryption mode that is superseded by WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK. The WEP option will be available only if you select up to 54 Mbps from the Mode menu.
  3. WPA2-PSK [AES]- This option is the default and recommended setting. This type of security enables WiFi devices that support WPA2 to join the router’s 2.4GHz WiFi network. If you did not change the wireless password, the default password displays on the router’s page. The default wireless password is printed on the Netgear router label. WPA2 provides a secure connection but some older WiFi devices do not detect WPA2 and they support only WPA. If your wireless network includes such older devices, then click on WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] security.
  4. WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]- This type of security enables your Wireless devices that support either WPA or WPA2 to join the Netgear router’s 2.4 GHz WiFi network. However, WPA-PSK [TKIP] is less secure as compared to WPA2-PSK [AES] and limits the speed of WiFi on the connected devices to 54 Mbps. To use this type of security, in the Password (Network Key) field, enter a phrase of 8 to 63 characters or 64 hex digits. To join the router’s WiFi network, a user must enter this password.
  5. WPA/WPA2 Enterprise: This type of security requires that your wireless network can access a RADIUS server.

From the Mode menu

Select one of the following modes:

  • Up to 54 Mbps- Legacy mode- This mode allows 802.11n, 802.11g, and 802.11b devices to join the network but limits 802.11n devices to function at up to 54 Mbps.
  • Up to 216 Mbps- We can also say it Neighbor-friendly mode. It will reduce the interference with neighboring WiFi networks. This mode allows 802.11n, 802.11g, and 802.11b devices to join the network but limits 802.11n devices to function at up to 216 Mbps.
  • Up to 450 Mbps- Performance mode- This mode allows 802.11n, 802.11g, and 802.11b devices to join the network and allows 802.11n devices to function at up to 450 Mbps. This mode is the default mode. WPA-PSK security supports speeds of up to 54 Mbps on your wireless devices. Even if your wireless devices are capable of a higher speed, WPA-PSK security limits their speed to 54 Mbps.

From the Channel menu

Select Auto for automatic channel selection (as per recommendation) or select an individual channel. The default selection is Auto. In some regions, not all channels are available. Do not change the channel unless you experience any interference (Experience lost connections or slow data transfers). If this situation occurs, experiment with different channels to see which is the best.

NOTE: If you use multiple WiFi access points (APs), reduce interference by selecting different channels for adjacent APs.We recommend a channel spacing of four channels between adjacent APs (for example, use recommended Channels 1 and 5, or 6 and 10).

Click the Apply button. Your settings are saved. If you connected over WiFi to the network and you changed the SSID, you are disconnected from the network.

Make sure that you can connect your device over WiFi to the network with its new settings.

If you are facing any issues to connect over the WiFi, check the following:

  • If your computer or mobile device is already connected to the different wireless networks in your area, disconnect it from that wireless network and connect it to the WiFi network that the R7900 Netgear router provides.
  • Some WiFi devices automatically get connected to the first available open network without WiFi security that they discover.
  • If your computer or mobile device is trying to connect to your network with its old password (before you changed the settings), update the WiFi network password in your computer or mobile device.
  • It should be matched with the New WiFi Password.
